The Background
stearns coffee was created because owner, Daniel Stearns and his wife Marisa, wanted to bring "the best coffee there is to Huntsville Alabama" - and he's done just that. In November 2007 stearns coffee opened at 2113 Whitesburg Drive. The shop not only has the best coffee and pastries around, but the Stearns' also have a passion for the community to know coffee.
Daniel first began to learn about coffee when he was a student at Auburn University. He began working at a local coffee shop, and it was here that his interest was first ignited. He has said that the first thing that attracted him to the coffee shop was the different people you would see, "black, white, young, old-you would just see everybody sitting together." From there Daniel moved to Washington, DC to manage Murky Coffee on Capital Hill. That is where he learned about high-quality, organic coffees. After two years of training at Murky, Daniel was ready to begin his dream of moving back to his hometown of Huntsville, Alabama and open the doors to stearns coffee.
The Purpose
After many months of searching for a location, building a relationship with Counter Culture Coffee, and finding the absolute best products for his shop, stearns coffee was opened. The shop serves Coffees from Counter Culture Coffee, a roasting company based in Durham, NC that emphasizes coffee quality, from the growers to the coffee beans to the coffee shop.
stearns coffee and Counter Culture have similar goals: stearns coffee strives to empress on people the full experience of a cup of coffee, "from the seed to the cup, every cup of coffee has a story"; Counter Culture Coffee lives by the same passion, as they pride themselves on "Coffee driven people. People driven coffee."
The Future
Not only does Daniel hope to raise the standards of coffee in the Huntsville/Madison area, he plans on having "cuppings." This is where the community, as well as local coffee shops, are invited to have tastings of the newest coffees at stearns coffee. He wants to educate the community on coffee from all around the world.
stearns coffee also wants to serve the community. Each month stearns coffee will have a different charity that they are supporting. During this month there will be a "Charity Coffee" in which all proceeds with go to that particular charity. Artwork from local charities and artists will also be displayed in the shop. This is done so that Stearns is not only educating on coffee but giving back to the community, both the talents in the community and the needs of the community.
